Europe, China and holiday planning
Guest blog: James Harries, Fund Manager, Newton Investment Management
In a client meeting yesterday I was asked if the concerns relating to Europe and China specifically and emerging markets more broadly are reasonable. Well, I do think that China is slowing and is likely to continue slowing; at Newton we think there’s been a big misallocation of capital in that economy and that the air coming out of the property sector there is likely to knock onto other areas of the economy in a way that won’t be particularly beneficial to investors.

When Usain Bolt broke the world record for the 100 and 200 metres at the Beijing Olympics in August 2008, the world was still a month away from being shaken by the news that Lehman Brothers was filing for bankruptcy. Four years later, with the world’s best athletes preparing to descend on London, Lehmans turned out to be just one in a series of financial tremors.
Help is at hand this tax year end
Moira was right, tax doesn’t have to be taxing, but it can severely try your patience when trying to engage clients in tax year end investment conversations with confidence in equities as low as it is at the moment – it must be like nailing jelly to a wall. It contains the ISA Support Kit, showing you how to create professional, tailored mailings to your clients, encouraging them to make full use of their ISA limits this year and next.

How are we helping you benefit from the opportunities?
Event latest: Economic Forum returns to London
We’re bringing our Economic Forum back to London’s Merchant Taylors’ Hall on Wednesday 7 March.
The market outlook is still uncertain, so planning client investment strategies must be increasingly difficult. So our Economic Forum will provide you with the latest in-depth market updates along with useful hints and tips designed to help you succeed through this year to a post RDR world.
A round up of our 2011 highlights
We started 2011 by trebling the team focussed on helping our clients prepare for RDR and smashing through the £30bn assets under administration threshold, and ended it with the launch of our Junior ISA, a number of great new enterprise client wins and AUA at £35bn.
As we start a new year, a momentous one in RDR terms, we thought it would be helpful to restate our position. Our strong and profitable foundation means we don’t need to worry about whether we’re a wrap or a supermarket – what we are is a broad investment services business meeting the needs of three core customer segments; investor, wealth and enterprise.
